Dear Parent/Guardian

Choosing the right school is a vitally important decision. All parents want a good education for their children but also want them to be happy, valued and secure. At Dylan Thomas Community School, we believe that we can offer all of these things.

Everybody at Dylan Thomas works extremely hard to create a close community of learners in which there is a clear focus upon raising standards for pupil achievement. As a school we have high expectations of our pupils; effort and excellent standards of achievement are encouraged and expected. It is through such expectations that our pupils are able to set improving targets which they go on to achieve.  We are proud to announce that last summer (2016) our Y11 students achieved record GCSE results with 82% of pupils achieved 5 A*-C's.

The school is still gathering pace in developing an excellent reputation for the achievements of our pupils whether academic, sporting, artistic or cultural. The school is greatly valued by the community it serves and is an increasingly popular choice for prospective pupils and their parents.

A marked feature of the school is the happy, friendly, caring family ethos which enables our pupils to settle quickly. We believe that this is vital if pupils are to achieve the maximum of their full potential.

In 2015 the school received a very favourable ESTYN inspection report which, in particular, highlighted the achievements of pupils at Key Stage 4 and was praised as being among the best in Wales at reducing the impact of deprivation on pupil outcomes. It also went on to say that ‘the school’s leadership is very successful in promoting a shared vision of providing high quality learning experiences and improving outcomes for all pupils’.

We believe that we are a true community school and that all those connected with us, whether they be pupils, staff, governors, parents and the wider community, are all part of our vision, which is that we:

  • Live as a community
  • Learn as a community
  • Achieve as a community

and that all pupils are:

  • Safe
  • Respectful
  • Ready to Learn

Pupils also gain from an outstanding programme of extra-curricular activities that is extensive, rich and diverse. Along with the broad, balanced and relevant curriculum provided by the school, the out of hours’ programme serves to ensure that opportunities are available to enable pupils to fully develop their interests and talents.

This web site aims to introduce you to our school but there can be no substitute for a personal visit. We would be delighted to show you around during a working day and answer any questions that you may have. Please contact us for an appointment.

Your sincerely

Mr P. Davies
Headteacher (Acting)
