We pleased to work closely with the Barnardo’s Bays partnership based in Swansea to provide relevant information for all pupils as they prepare to leave us and eventually move on to live independently.
The Bays project provides both statutory and voluntary advice to young people aged 16 to 18 living in Swansea who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. Peter is our excellent liaison link who works closely with us to provide a wealth of support and information for our pupils.
How do they support our young people?
- PSE programme
Lessons are delivered by members of the team to years 10 and 11 and teach our pupils skills such as financial management, job application techniques, life skills for independent living, moral and social aspects of both homelessness and independent living etc.
- Lunchtime Drop in sessions
Peter visits us during the summer term once a week at lunchtime and bases himself near the pupil entrance so that pupils who need advice, support or just a person to listen to them can access the support they need to begin to plan their lives after leaving Dylan Thomas Community School.
- One to one support
For those pupils in crisis Pete works closely with them trying to ensure that they remain safe. This may involve mediating with the family, acting as an advocate, providing signposts for emergency temporary accommodation or better still supporting youngsters both emotionally and practically as they make the move into independent living accommodation.
